Wellbeing at UCL

University life can be challenging, overwhelming, exhausting… the list goes on.

At UCL History Society, we want our members to feel supported throughout their time at university. On this page, we’ve outlined some places where you can access wellbeing support at uni. All of these resources are completely free.

Disability, Mental Health and Wellbeing (DMHW) Team – you can book appointments to speak to advisers, and can request a BAME adviser and/or a male or female adviser. There are same-day brief appointments or longer, 1 hour appointments for more complex problems. You can book appointments by sending an enquiry on askUCL. This service isn’t for counselling, therapy, or support in a mental health crisis/emergency. However, they can speak to the department about your needs, help you apply for exam adjustments, speak to your accommodation about adjustments, and so on.

Student Psychological and Counselling Services (SPCS) – this is a service that provides short-term counselling, psychiatric support and group workshops. They don’t offer long-term counselling or support in a crisis. To register for the services offered by SPCS, fill out this form. You can request a BAME or female counsellor, but this might mean you’ll wait for the services longer. If you’re self-isolating, SPCS is running special online events, such as mindfulness, exercise and baking; you can see the calendar and book your place here.

Global Student Assistance Programme – this service is for UCL students on study abroad programmes, as well as any other students overseas, like international students currently studying remotely. They’ll provide you with support on a range of issues, like managing stress, couples’ support, culture shock and improving self-esteem. If you’re in the UK, call them on +44 (0)800 174 319, and if you’re outside the UK, call them on +44 (0)1452 623 246. They’re available 24/7, 365 days of the year.

Care First – this is an independent advice and counselling service that UCL pays for. You can approach them for a range of issues, including bereavement, relationship problems, bullying and exam stress. You can access this support Mon-Fri 5pm-9am and 24 hrs on weekends, bank holidays and UCL closure periods. For telephone counselling, call them on +44 (0)800 197 4510. Alternatively, you can access online counselling; the username is uclstudent and the password is bentham. They can’t provide long-term support, emergency support in a crisis, or advice about academic adjustments.
